Dealing with symptoms and side effects

Urinary problems

Prostate cancer and its treatments can cause a number of urinary problems including:

  • retention (problems emptying the bladder)
  • frequency (needing to pass urine more often)
  • urgency (sudden urges to go to the toilet)
  • incontinence (leaking of urine)

Prostate cancer itself may cause retention, frequency, urgency or pain on passing urine, which are usually caused by the tumour or prostate pressing on the urethra (the tube carrying urine from the bladder)

They will suggest ways of managing the problem, which may involve a treatment or lifestyle change.

Managing urinary problems

  • Avoiding fizzy drinks and diuretics – examples include alcohol and caffeine. These may irritate your bladder or make you want to go to the toilet more often.
  • Strengthening your pelvic floor muscles by doing pelvic floor muscle exercises – this involves tightening and relaxing the muscles that you use to urinate and the muscles around the opening to your back passage. It’s important to make sure you’ve found the right muscles before you start doing these exercises so ask your healthcare team for advice
  • Bladder retraining – this involves learning to hold back from going to the toilet before your bladder is full
  • Using pads to absorb leaking urine

There are also treatments available which help stop urine from leaking. These include long-term catheters, artificial urinary sphincters, internal slings and bulking agents.
